South Granville

Overview

Located mere minutes from downtown Vancouver and easily accessible from all over the Lower Mainland, South Granville is a neighbourhood that should be on every visitor’s itinerary. This is where Vancouver comes to taste the best, find their style, live well, and indulge themselves. South Granville is where you’ll find something for everyone—the aspiring interior designer, the power-shopper, the spa lover, the food, and wine connoisseur—the list is endless. South Granville is a tastemaker’s paradise. Located in one of Vancouver’s most affluent neighbourhoods, this swanky yet welcoming shopping district runs from the Granville Bridge to 16th Avenue, and is nestled between Shaughnessy to the south, Kitsilano to the west, and Granville Island and downtown Vancouver to the north. The area was first developed by the Canadian Pacific Railway as an elite neighbourhood back in 1907, and has been a busy shopping district ever since. Just off of Granville Street, you can still catch glimpses of grand estates, like Hycroft, past tall hedges and long driveways. It only takes about 15 minutes to walk from end to end, but expect to spend at least a few hours browsing through stylish fashion and home boutiques, luxe salons and spas, high-end art galleries (yes, they are open to the public!), and breaks for an incredible meal or treats along the way.

Seeing and Doing

By day, South Granville is a walkable shopping and art gallery hotspot. Between blocks, don’t forget to peek down the alleys and side streets to find Instagrammable murals by local artists, cozy open air plazas at 13th and 14th Avenues, and beautiful tree-lined residential streets. By night, settle in for a memorable meal at one of more than 30 restaurants and eateries followed by a show at the historical Stanley Theatre. The Stanley, as it is known affectionately by locals, welcomes theatre-goers with world-class performances and an opulent neoclassical interior. Plus, with great parking, transit connections, and Mobi bike stations along 7th, 10th, and 14th, plus access to the AAA (All-Ages-and-Abilities) Biking Network, it’s easy to get to and from South Granville.

Eating and Drinking

You are never more than a block away from great food in South Granville. Stop by one (or two!) independently owned coffee shops for expertly crafted coffee and arguably the best croissants in the city, then stock up on hard-to-find culinary treasures at a gourmet grocer. Come lunch and dinner, cozy eateries and bustling patios come alive with flavours ranging from Lebanese and Indian to Italian and Asian-fusion, with great vegan and vegetarian options, too. And don’t forget dessert!

Shopping and Souvenirs

The South Granville shopping experience harkens back to a golden era of retail. Stylish international fashion and home brands are intermixed with local specialty shops offering some of the best shoe, lingerie, jewellery, cosmetic, children’s clothing, luxury resale, and house and kitchenware selection in the city. Start anywhere along the strip to shop in a convenient loop, working down one side of the street and up the other, until you end up back where you started. It’s hard not to find something to love, with so many unique and stylish shops!
