April 12, 2018 marks the third annual Global Meetings Industry Day where leaders from across the Meetings and Events industry are gathering in support. GMID celebrations are being held across the globe aimed to demonstrate the measurable impact that meetings have on businesses, economies and communities. Our Metro Vancouver event will be held at the Anvil Centre in New Westminster.
Face-to-face interaction is the platform where deals are struck, relationships are forged and ideas are generated. That’s the real power of what business meetings, conferences, conventions, incentive travel, trade shows and exhibitions collectively do for people, businesses and communities.
There’s no substitute for a handshake and the value of a personal network can’t be overstated. But beyond the qualitative, there are concrete, tangible outcomes that come from personal connections. And the benefits of conventions, events, exhibitions and trade shows ripple beyond the walls of the meeting space and hotels. When meetings come to a community everybody benefits. The face-to-face industry creates jobs, generates commerce and creates far-reaching community impact.
A few facts about the benefits this industry brings to Vancouver. In 2018, Vancouver will welcome 33 citywide conventions and events, the highest number the city has ever hosted in a single year. These 33 events will bring over 100,000 out-of-town delegates to Vancouver where they will inject money into the local economy through hotel stays, dining, attractions visits, shopping, transit and more.
In total, Vancouver’s meetings and conventions industry supports more than 6,000 jobs and results in over $300 million annually in direct visitor spending and $500 million in economic impact for the Vancouver economy.
