Many of our visiting conventions will raise a toast to Vancouver after a successful meeting, but in August, expect this to be taken to the extreme! From August 23 through 26, Vancouver will host the 86th Annual Toastmasters International Convention, welcoming more than 1,600 professional leaders, public speakers and communicators to the city, with the general public also invited to attend the events.

The 2017 lineup has been released and features an exceptional roster of presenters that you can learn about here. A high point of the convention is The World Championship of Public Speaking, with more than 10 contestants from all over the world delivering speeches with the hope of becoming the next World Champion.

Another highlight will be the convention’s Opening Ceremonies, where the organization’s 2017 Golden Gavel recipient, Erin Gruwell, will address the crowd. Gruwell is the founder of Freedom Writers Foundation, which works with educators to help them connect to students using literature that reflects a student’s challenges, and then writing about their personal experiences. Past recipients of the Golden Gavel include Walter Cronkite, Stephen Covey, Anthony Robbins, Muhammad Yunus and Zig Ziglar.

Toastmasters International chose Vancouver as the host city for its 2017 convention for a wide range of reasons, says Daniel Rex, the organization’s Chief Executive Officer. “Vancouver is a modern, multicultural, travel-friendly and scenic city. We’re excited to hold the convention at the award-winning Vancouver Convention Centre as the site’s location on Vancouver’s waterfront, with a dramatic mountain backdrop, is stunning. And Vancouver offers many options for delegates with an active lifestyle.”

“In addition, thousands of Toastmasters live in close proximity to Vancouver, making this year’s International Convention convenient for many of our members.”

All events will be held at the Vancouver Convention Centre, and members of the public interested in attending can register at Toastmasters.org.
