Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson has stated that Vancouver will be the "greenest city in the world by 2020." To that end, the City of Vancouver's Greenest City Action Plan, launched in 2009, has brought green change, including new bike lanes, car sharing co-ops and a green re-zoning policy. On the horizon is a new bike share program and curb-side compost collection. Vancouver is currently ranked as Canada's greenest city -and the second greenest in North America (Economist Intelligence Unit's Green City Index). As of 2010, Vancouver's skyline has proudly included a wind turbine atop Grouse Mountain (tours available). The city is also home to the one-of-a kind Eco Fashion Week, a responsible fashion event that's making waves amongst fashionistas and environmentalists alike.
Extra! Did you know the international environmental organization Greenpeace was founded in Vancouver in 1971? Adbusters magazine (instigators of Occupy Wall Street and Buy Nothing Day) also started in Vancouver.
