Indigenous Summer Arts Studio

The studio—located next to Wawadiťła (Mungo Martin House) in Thunderbird Park—is a place where Indigenous artists will be able to create, share, learn, network with peers and meet guests from around the world. The Indigenous Summer Arts Studio program is the result of discussions with Indigenous artists during consultations on the renewal of the Thunderbird Park Carving Studio. The studio will include both mentoring and emerging Indigenous artists.

This exhibition features contemporary works, classic images, and vintage photographs from several local archives and collections, considering how dogs have shaped, and are shaped by, human society. This summer, the gallery space will be transformed into a custom-built cinema, showing a film that runs for 24-hours which also functions as a real timepiece. We are thrilled to be featuring an iconic work by Christian Marclay that has been called “a masterpiece of our times” and “sublime.” The Clock montages film and television footage from the last 70 years, intricately edited in both its visuals and sound. Thousands of film fragments come together collaged into a full day of modern life, mirroring the experiences of our lives and unraveling a narrative that feels as if it will continue on forever. In 2011, Christian Marclay won the coveted Gold Lion Award at the Venice Biennale for this now-famous artwork, recently presented at the Tate Modern, London.

The District of West Vancouver’s 29th annual Harmony Arts Festival, presented by Odlum Brown Limited, launches August 2, 2019. It features 10 days of events and activities designed to showcase arts and culture and celebrate summer on the North Shore. An extensive array of programming includes more than 50 free live musical performances and concerts on two stages, art markets, al fresco culinary experiences on the waterfront, art demonstrations, talks, and exhibits, outdoor cinema nights in the park, fun activities and interactive art experiences for kids.
