Vancouverites are a sporty bunch: if you don’t find us running or biking the seawall around Stanley Park, then we're likely out rowing or kayaking on the calm waters surrounding downtown. Or maybe we’re limbering up for an after-work yoga class or planning an early morning run up Grouse Mountain on the infamous Grouse Grind. Maybe it’s the lure of those mountains or the promise of those pristine forest trails just minutes from downtown, but Vancouverites love to stay fit and it’s the perfect city for both participating and watching sports. Here’s a round up of professional and amateur sporting events we’re looking forward to in 2017.
Rugby Sevens at BC Place | March 11-12
With much anticipation, Rugby Sevens will return to Vancouver in 2017 on March 11-12. Last March, the world's top rugby teams took Vancouver by storm during the HSBC World Rugby Seven Series Tournament at BC Place Stadium. The two-day tournament exceeded organizers’ expectation by selling more than 60,000 tickets. Get your face paint and costumes ready, Rugby Sevens is back!
BMO Vancouver Marathon | May 7
The BMO Vancouver Marathon, held in May every year since 1972, it is the largest international marathon event in Canada and also includes a wheelchair division, half-marathon, an 8k run, and a kids’ 1k run, as well as a family-friendly street festival for runners and spectators. Canadian Running Magazine called the marathon one of the best “anywhere in the world” for its beautiful course, which takes in “...the most spectacular of Vancouver’s running routes — through UBC campus, Point Grey and, perhaps the most stunning final 10K of any marathon, along Stanley Park’s Seawall.”
Harry Jerome International Track Classic | June 11
Part of the National Track League series, the Harry Jerome International Track Classic was established in 1983 and is Canada’s oldest and most prestigious track and field meet. In 2016, a record crowd of 6,000-plus came out to Swangard Stadium to watch Canada’s newest sprint sensation, Andre De Grasse, win both the 100 and 200-metre events. The Track Classic returns on June 11, 2017.
Vancouver Dragon Boat Festival | June 23-25
Around 200 teams from around the globe will paddle the waters of downtown Vancouver’s False Creek at the 29th Annual Vancouver Dragon Boat Festival. Beginning with the colourful Eye-dotting Ceremony and evening opening concert, the festival continues with two days of non-stop entertainment on the World Beat Stage, fabulous food, art installations, Interactive Circus performances, and of course, dragon boat racing of the highest caliber.
NCAA Division I Basketball | November
Premier basketball is back in Vancouver! Starting November 2017, eight men's and eight women's basketball teams will descend upon the 2010 Olympic Host City annually during the American Thanksgiving holiday week.
