Vancouver is gearing up ring in Canada’s 150th anniversary year with the biggest New Years Eve celebration in the country – and some of Canada’s top bands will join the festivities.
The family-friendly event will take place next to Vancouver’s downtown harbour with an expanded site featuring multiple performance stages; a new countdown clock tower; and a family zone with face painting, crafts and arcade games. Two spectacular fireworks shows are scheduled, at 9.00pm and midnight; the general public are invited to attend free of charge, though ticketed viewing zones are available inside Canada Place and along the seawall promenade of the Vancouver Convention Centre. The latter zones guarantee prime views of the fireworks over Coal Harbour as well as in-and-out privileges to check out the entertainment on the main and outdoor music stages. This year, tickets are offered at a reduced price to make it easier for families to enjoy the celebrations together.
Alternative rock band The Sheepdogs will headline the free outdoor celebration while indie favourites The New Pornographers will take centre stage at “True North”, a new ticketed party staged in the Vancouver Convention Centre’s West building (all True North ticket holders will also enjoy premium viewing of the midnight fireworks with the option of watching the show from indoor or outdoor areas overlooking Jack Poole Plaza). Throughout the night, additional performances will take place by a rock-star lineup of bands and DJs, including Wintersleep, Yukon Blonde, Humans, Meghan Patrick, Delhi 2 Dublin and more.
Last year, the event attracted nearly 90,000 attendees. For more information on NYE 2016, visit www.nyevan.com.
