From early May through October, Great Bear Nature Tours offers grizzly bear viewing excursions from Port Hardy to a beautiful river valley on the central coast of British Columbia. Known as the Great Bear Rainforest, this area is one of the best places in the world to observe grizzly (brown) bears and many other forms of wildlife including black bears, wolves and bald eagles. Great Bear Nature Tours is rated by National Geographic Adventure as one of the Best Adventure Travel Companies on Earth. Our ecotourism lodge is the ideal base for photography and wildlife viewing tours, nestled at the mouth of a pristine salmon river. Wilderness-gourmet meals await you upon your return from the two guided viewing sessions per day. With a maximum of sixteen guests, you are assured of a personalised wilderness adventure in this very special area. Great Bear Lodge was upgraded for 2014, with the unveiling of a new floating lodge as the base for its grizzly bear viewing tours. Your seaplane flight from Port Hardy on Vancouver Island takes you to a remote wilderness, where at the end of a fjord you will round a corner to find the new Great Bear Lodge. The charming two-storey lodge is covered in red cedar, a signature tree from the forests of coastal British Columbia. The lodge is powered by wind, solar and micro-hydro in keeping with our commitment to low-impact ecotourism. The friendly staff will welcome you on the dock, then show you to one of the eight new bedrooms. Each bedroom is located on the second storey, with views out onto the sublime Great Bear Rainforest. After settling in, you can join your fellow guests in the comfortable lounge and dining area downstairs, which has an extensive library of natural history books and a place to watch presentations by the lodge biologists. Natural wood decks surround the lodge, a perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine after dinner while admiring the beauty of the scenery.
