The reorganization of the French Royal Academy under Louis XIV in the 17th century marked the move towards a more unified painting style. Most European countries adapted similar art institutions, including England, Scotland and Denmark. Narrative scenes were held in high regard by the Academies, as in one painting artists displayed their competence in landscape, portraiture and still life. For example, Marcus Stone’s ‘An Interrupted Duel’ was one of the most celebrated paintings in the Royal Academy in 1868. Glowing reviews about the artist’s skill in depicting the emotional state and impeccable composition of the scene were published in The Art Journal and The Illustrated London News. Artists in this exhibition include: Marcus Stone, Edmund Blair Leighton, Sir William Russell Flint amongst others.
