In 2002, Ms. Parks won the Pulitzer Prize for Topdog/Underdog, becoming the first African American woman to receive the prize.
This landmark drama is a darkly comic fable of brotherly love and family identity. The play tells the story of Lincoln and Booth, two brothers whose names were given to them as a joke, foretelling a lifetime of sibling rivalry. Lincoln is a former three-card monte hustler now working as an Abraham Lincoln impersonator in a rundown arcade; Booth is a shoplifter who wants his brother to return to street hustling. Haunted by the past, the brothers are forced to confront the shattering reality of their future.
Topdog/Underdog features a jazz score designed by local musician Daniel Deorksen and performed live by a three piece jazz orchestra.
Topdog/Underdog stars Aadin Church as Lincoln and David Lloyd as Booth. Directed by David Newham. Sound Design by Daniel Deorksen. Costume Design by Ines Ortner. Lighting and Stage Design by David Newham. Stage Management by Jillian Perry.
