Flock is a suspended installation that addresses the power of the collective female voice. It is inspired by murmurations, in which birds flock together for safety in numbers, to keep warm, and to exchange information - much like the plight of women today.
Artists Hanna Benihoud and Charlotte Spafford went to social media and asked the question “which book by a female author has most impacted your life?”. They used the most popular books (including The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and Cat’s Eye by Margaret Atwood) as source material for their installation. Flock is a living installation, and will evolve for the duration of the 2 week period with the artists making changes on a near-daily basis. The effect is a real time stop-motion animation that reflects the power and dynamism of female voices.
Flock will be up from Friday May 25th to Sunday June 10th at The Aviary (637 E 15th St).
