The Soviet Musicians' Union Conference in Moscow.

Stalin, preparing to enforce his new policy for the Arts, summons two leading Russian composers, along with his Cultural Minister, to discuss how the creative gifts of artists should best be shaped to serve the Soviet state.

The evening becomes increasingly fraught as the political discussion becomes more personal, and as tempers rise so do the stakes for the aging composers, with vast and far-reaching implications for artists in autocratic states and indeed for citizens of oppressive regimes everywhere,
