2010 Winter Games Olympic Venues

The 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games were held at various facilities and venues across Vancouver – from the outskirts of bustling downtown to the city’s majestic west shore mountains. Below, you’ll find a list of the 2010 Winter Games venues:
Competition Venues
Canada Hockey Place – The 2010 Olympic Winter Games ice hockey tournaments were staged in two locations – Canada Hockey Place and the UBC Thunderbird Arena. Canada Hockey Place (currently known as GM Place) is also home to the famous Vancouver Canucks hockey team. As one of the busiest arenas in North America, Canada Hockey Place hosts some 100 events each year and has attracted some of the biggest names in show business.
Vancouver Olympic Centre/Vancouver Paralympic Centre - This 108,000-square-foot centre hosted the curling competitions during the 2010 Winter Games. With an idyllic location that includes beautiful Queen Elizabeth Park and views of the local snow-capped mountains, this venue offered both a lively community and a picturesque garden setting. As part of the Vancouver 2010 Venues Aboriginal Arts Program, the centre showcased traditional and contemporary artwork by First Nations, Inuit and Metis artists from across Canada.
Pacific Coliseum – Just minutes from downtown Vancouver, the Pacific Coliseum hosted the figure skating and short-track speed skating competitions during the 2010 Winter Games.
UBC Thunderbird Arena – Located at British Columbia’s largest and most well known university – the University of British Columbia (UBC) – the Thunderbird Arena hosted some of the ice hockey events during the 2010 Winter Games. This site will also host the ice sledge hockey events for the 2010 Paralympic Games. This prestigious university is situated on a sprawling ocean side campus surrounded by old-growth trees on the west side of Vancouver.
Richmond Olympic Oval – Home to all the speed skating events, the Richmond Olympic Oval sits on the banks of the Fraser River – just 14 kilometres south of downtown Vancouver. Located in the northwest corner of Richmond, the Oval is across the river from the Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and is ideally situated near Richmond’s bustling city centre.
Cypress Mountain – As part of the West Vancouver district, Cypress Mountain is located inside Cypress Provincial Park and hosted the Olympic freestyle skiing and snowboarding events. With its majestic peaks, Cypress Mountain offers breathtaking panoramic views of Vancouver.
Non-Competition Venues
BC Place – Centrally located in downtown Vancouver, BC Place hosted the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games as well as the Opening Ceremony for the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games – and was home to the nightly Victory Ceremonies presentations.
Main Media Centre - The Main Media Centre (MMC) for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games was located in the city’s vibrant downtown area. Located on Vancouver’s urban waterfront featuring a dramatic mountain backdrop, the Canada Place complex and the Vancouver Convention Centre will provided workspace for nearly 3,000 accredited members of the press. Canada Place housed the Main Press Centre, while the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) was located in the new, west section of the Vancouver Convention Centre.
Olympic and Paralympic Village Vancouver – Situated in Vancouver’s picturesque False Creek area, the Olympic and Paralympic Village present extraordinary views of the city’s downtown skyline and coastal mountains. With its central location, the Olympic and Paralympic Village offers proximity to both the competition venues, and the city’s shopping and entertainment districts – and is just minutes from the nightly Victory Ceremonies and cultural celebrations at BC Place Stadium. The goal of the Olympic and Paralympic Village was to provide a comfortable “home away from home” for some 2,100 athletes and officials participating in the 2010 Winter Games.
