Currency and Currency Exchange

Canada uses the Canadian Dollar (CDN), though many Vancouver establishments do accept US dollars and Japanese yen – and usually offer reasonable exchange rates. And while it’s possible to use credit cards and traveller’s cheques at many businesses, we recommend carrying some Canadian money while exploring Vancouver.

Your currency can be exchanged at any bank, along with conveniently located currency exchange businesses throughout the city, and at the Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

Canadian currency is available in banknotes of $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100.

Canadian coins come in denominations of $0.01, $0.05, $0.10 and $0.25. There are also two higher denomination coins: a large gold-coloured $1 coin that is commonly referred to as a “Loonie” because it features a Canadian bird – the loon – on its face. The second is a $2 coin, which is bi-metallic and referred to as a “Toonie.”
