Add to My Notebook

Displaying the Museum’s extensive collection of taxidermy for the first time in decades, Ravishing Beasts investigates this provocative and strangely alluring practice. Whether a hoarding of exotic curiosities, a scientific archive, a hunting trophy, or a stuffed pet, taxidermy always exposes longings to capture animals and tell stories about their significance within human lives.

By examining the history, science, aesthetics and ethics of taxidermy particularly within natural history museums, Ravishing Beasts questions the legacy and current value of the practice.

Whether as a source of delight or revulsion, taxidermy reveals as much about our collective desires and concerns as it does about death and domination. Sometimes the most unlikely objects offer the most eloquent commentaries.

Ravishing Beasts is on exhibit at the Museum of Vancouver from October 22, 2009 through to February 28, 2010.
