Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art

The Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art is downtown Vancouver’s public art gallery named after the acclaimed Haida artist Bill Reid (1920 –1998). The Gallery is dedicated to understanding and appreciating contemporary Aboriginal art of the Northwest Coast of North America.

Continuum: Vision and Creativity on the Northwest Coast is a featured exhibition of emerging and mid-career Aboriginal artists from British Columbia, Washington State and Alaska. The artists have used a wide variety of media and approaches from painting, photo-animation, textiles, sculpture, photo-lithography, jewelry and mixed media, to installation and collaboration.

Other Gallery highlights include Reid’s gold and silver jewelry, Reid’s bronze masterpiece Mythic Messengers, several of Reid’s works featured on the Canadian $20 banknote, and a full scale totem pole carved by James Hart of Haida Gwaii.

Museum Of Anthropology

The Museum of Anthropology houses one of the world’s finest displays of Northwest Coast First Nations art in a spectacular building overlooking mountains and sea. They offer long term and temporary exhibits of indigenous arts from around the world, an outdoor totem display, elegant Shop, year-round, licenced Café MOA, free guided tours, and unique public programs for all ages. Currently, the Museum is undergoing a $55.5 million expansion and renewal project, which has resulted in the temporary closure of some galleries. However, the Great Hall, Bill Reid Rotunda, and Koerner Ceramics Gallery are currently open to the public. MOA’s Multiversity Galleries (formerly Visible Storage) and major temporary exhibition gallery will open early in the new year. On January 23 and 24, 2010, everyone is invited to celebrate the completion of their renewal project. The launch of their new facilities, along with a major exhibition of contemporary works by 12 international artists (“Boundary and Translation: New Art Across Cultures,” co-presented by the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad), plus a full weekend of exciting, provocative programming, will signal a new era and a new direction for MOA. As their renovations near completion, they stand poised as never before to celebrate their collections from around the world – Africa, Asia, Oceania, the Americas, and Europe, as well as their deep and rich collections from – and connections with – First Nations of the Northwest Coast of British Columbia.
