VANCOUVER CHARACTER PROFILE

For the fifth year, Vancouver's CelticFest will stretch traditional St. Patrick's Day festivities into a celebration of all things Celtic. From March 12 to 16, the sounds of vigorous fiddles, skirling bagpipes, boisterous bodhrans, dancing feet and voices will resound throughout downtown Vancouver, bringing together visitors and locals for more than 50 events scheduled at dozens of popular venues and three outdoor stages in downtown Vancouver.

Among the hundreds of artists performing at this year's festival, headlining acts include Scotland's Battlefield Band, Tony McManus, Steafan Hannigan, Wendy MacIsaac & Patrick Gillis, Spirit of the West, plus the international supergroup Celtic Fiddle Festival. Along with musical performances, highlights include the Lucky Charms Poker Tournament, Battle of the Bards - a poetry face-off, the Whisky Kiss scotch tasting event and a brewmaster's dinner, as well as Celtic music and dance workshops. The most popular free event of the festival is the annual St. Patrick's Day parade, which will be held on Sunday March 16 from 11am, starting at the corner of Howe and Davie Streets in downtown Vancouver.

VANCOUVER IN BLOOM
Thanks to Vancouver's mild climate, the city starts to blossom into spring a little earlier than you might imagine. By early March, the trees lining Vancouver's streets are already beginning to burst into sprays of pink and white and the cherry blossoms announce the end of winter. To celebrate, the third annual Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival springs to life March 25 to April 20.

Inspired by the 36,000 cherry trees in parks, boulevards and private gardens across the city, the festival features the "Cherry Jam" outdoor concert, a Haiku poetry contest, plein-air blossom painting classes, tree talks and walks, trolley tours and a photo contest. A cherry blossom map will also be available on the website, marking the locations of some of the most beautiful blossom-viewing locations thanks to volunteer "Cherry Scouts" across the city.

Mark Gower, director of Vancouver Operations, Whistler Dogsledding
Mark Gower is a pretty mushy guy. In fact, Mark is a professional "musher" currently operating introductory dogsledding experiences at Mt Seymour ski resort - 30-minutes from downtown Vancouver. Perfect for all ages and ability levels, the one-hour experience offers a "taste of dogsledding" in which you are introduced to the sport, taught how to harness the dogs and given a thrilling 20-minute ride in the sled. And the best part? Lots of cuddle time with the beautiful and friendly dogs. Mark tells us more about the dogsledding experience and why he loves to mush.

1) Did you know you were going to grow up to be a "musher"?
No I didn't! I was working at a law firm in Australia before I came to Whistler and started dogsledding. It just sort of fell into my lap when a friend saw an ad in the paper for mushers. But I absolutely love it. It's a very rewarding job because the dogs love what they do. The closer you get to them the harder they work for you. My friends back in Australia definitely don't understand!

2) Can you accommodate large groups on your tours?
We're very happy to make special arrangements for groups. In the past we've had as many as 14 sleds going at one time. If you brought a large group to Mt. Seymour it might be fun to offer dogsledding in addition to some of the other great activities offered on the mountain like skiing, snow tubing, snowshoeing and snowboarding.

3) How many dogs do you have and what are they like?
Whistler Dogsledding has 330 dogs with 330 personalities - shy, flirty, rambunctious, curious, you name it. But all the dogs are really friendly and 95 per cent of them love the attention they get. Between them, they meet about 10,000 people a year on our various tours so they are great with our guests.

Mt Seymour's introductory dogsledding experience costs $49 for adults and $29 for children. Special arrangements can be made for groups and tour operators. For more information visit www.mountseymour.com or email asessions@tourismvancouver.com.
