Tourism Vancouver's Sport Tourism Initiative

Tourism Vancouver recognizes the significance and value of sporting events, and is committed to enhancing Vancouver's image as a premier sports event destination through its Sport Tourism Initiative.

Due to the competitive climate of the growing sport tourism industry, Vancouver's Sport Tourism Task Force was created. It is an advisory group made up of Greater Vancouver's industry stakeholders that collectively contribute to the promotion and encouragement of sport hosting throughout the community.

Tourism Vancouver's Sport Tourism Initiative targets high-profile national and international sporting events that showcase Vancouver as a sport friendly, sport embracing, premier tourist destination.

Objectives:

  1. Identify sporting events that yield substantial incremental tourism business for the greater Vancouver area through length of stay and attendance - with the main measure being hotel room night generation.
  2. Identify sporting events that match greater Vancouver's sport facility inventory to ensure hosting capabilities and feasibility.
  3. Encourage both public and private sector support for sport event business in order to secure more bids.
  4. Assist with the assembly of local organizing committees to move forward with sport event bids.
  5. Establish Vancouver as a sport friendly city and preferred sports events destination.
