Dr. Adeera Levin is a common name in the world of nephrology. Not only is she the head of UBC’s Division of Nephrology, but she is also the Executive Director of the BC Provincial Renal Agency, the Editor-In-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Kidney Health & Disease, and the President of the International Society of Nephrology.

The World Congress of Nephrology was held in Vancouver in 2011; an initiative that was first spearheaded by Dr. Levin in 2003. After an unsuccessful bid to host the conference in 2009, Vancouver was awarded the right to host the 2011 conference. Dr. Levin brought together her local colleagues and the Canadian Society of Nephrology to host more than 5,000 experts over the course of four days.

Now she is taking up a leadership role once again, this time co-leading Canada’s largest-ever effort to improve care for people with kidney disease. The $59 million initiative will take place over five years and will be Canada’s largest investment in research to improve care for people with chronic kidney disease, which affects one in ten Canadians.

We want to wish Dr. Levin good luck in this research endeavour. She is a local host not only driving innovation in her field and her city, but also improving the quality of life for Canadians.
