The Ocean Discovery Centre is an aquarium and environmental education centre that explores the wonders of the Salish Sea. (Salish Sea is the name given to the inside waters off Vancouver Island that is the traditional home of the Coast Salish people). The Centre is a bold environmental education facility and gateway to nature. Nothing quite like it exists today. Located in Sidney, British Columbia in the breathtaking Gulf Islands on Canada’s West Coast with direct access to the ocean ecosystem, the Ocean Discovery Centre will generate a passion for understanding and cherishing our oceans. The energies of gifted educators, equipped with the very best learning environments and supporting technologies will inspire our community and visitors to understand and protect the planet’s oceans.

The centre is designed to have broad appeal to all ages. This is a place where children, families and adults will engage with knowledgeable Oceaneers in hands on/hands wet learning opportunities while surrounded by massive aquarium habitats showcasing hundreds of fishes, invertebrates and marine plants of the Salish Sea. Formal education programs, focused on elementary and secondary school students and summer education camps will also be offered. The core visitor experience will take place in a breathtaking aquarium of the Gulf Islands ecosystem, equipped with dynamic teaching spaces, live ocean exhibits and the technologies required to explore and understand the ocean. More programs will take place outside the building in nature. Utilizing the astonishing ocean ecosystem of the Salish Sea at our front door, visitors will encounter whales, dolphins, sea lions, seals and countless seabirds in their natural environment. The Ocean Discovery Centre has an essential role to inspire our community and visitors to the region to connect with nature.
