Vancouver Folk Music Festival presents Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion

Details

Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion brought some hefty heritage to their life and musical partnership before they even began making beautiful music together. She is the granddaughter of America's greatest folk icon, Woody Guthrie, and the daughter of Arlo Guthrie. He's a grand-nephew of author John Steinbeck and a product of the '90s indie-rock scene out of Chapel Hill, N. C.

They knew they had something special when they discovered their mutual love of harmonies. That harmonic connection has been described as "reminiscent of the special alchemy between Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris."

Over the course of their career together, they've toured the folk and acoustic pop circuit, playing in clubs and theaters and their fair share of high-profile folk festivals, including the VFMF in 2013. They also appear with Arlo and Abe Guthrie as The Guthrie Family band, and spent a year playing many gigs tied to Woody's 100th birthday. And while those legendary family trees may have provided a solid foundation, their collaboration is all about two talented and adventurous artists on an exciting, very modern, musical journey all their own.

With their latest CD, Wassaic Way in 2013, the duo pushed into new territory. In an effort to grow their folkie sound, Guthrie and Irion enlisted Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and Pat Sansone to co-produce the album. The result was not only a new recording, but a change in their music-making.

The Austin Chronicle calls it "lighthearted pop mixed with hazy moods that's equally surprising and rewarding... The combination of Irion's poetic lyrics with grand atmospherics from Tweedy and Sansone makes it the married duo's most entrancing work."

Other reviewers chimed in on their new course:
"... the new album has a pop sheen edged with distinct eclectic, experimental touches. The sonic style of the songs is divided between sunny West Coast pop and a darker, more meditative style." - Chicago Sun-Times

Since the album's August release, Irion and Guthrie have toured the U.S. and Australia. With the help of family and talented musical friends around the country, the pair continues to carry on their family's artistic legacy, and make their own unique and inspiring musical statement. Come listen!
