The award-winning LA-based repertory dance company BODYTRAFFIC, founded by New York transplants Lillian Barbeito and Tina Finkelman Berkett, showcases its choreographic and performing versatility in a World Premiere by Hofesh Shechter and two Canadian Premieres by Richard Siegal and Barak Marshall.
"Coming off prestigious gigs at New York's Joyce Theater and Jacob's Pillow in Massachusetts, ... BodyTraffic presented two sold-out programs at Santa Monica's Broad Stage ... that demonstrated a most hopeful combination of choreographic and performing excellence... showing how a penchant for amplitude and precision translated between everything from Barak Marshall's hellbent shtetl heteros to Richard Siegel's slap-happy jazz performers." Los Angeles Times 2013
Israeli Hofesh Shechter is one of the UK's most exciting and talked-about choreographers, delivering intensely physical, reathtaking work that immediately connects with audiences. Arguably dance's next big thing, Shechter often works both as composer and choreographer and is renowned for the raw, vibrant edge found in his dance. With the highly skilled and individually talented dancers of BODYTRAFFIC, Shechter will complete the choreography for this World Premiere in a Chutzpah! Residency from February 14-20.
o2joy by Richard Siegal (Munich Dance Award winner 2013) in its Canadian premiere is playful, contemporary dance, showcasing the company's strong classical ballet training. Set to great American jazz music, o2joy is peppered with syncopated hip-hop and drenched in humor. As its title suggests, o2joy is an expression of sheer joy through music and movement, and is a reminder that entertainment and pop culture references have a place in concert dance.
The second Canadian premiere, And at Midnight, the Green Bride Floated Through the Village Square ... by Israeli American choreographer and Chutzpah! favourite, Barak Marshall, finds dark comedy in this "morality tale" of a large family and their feuds. To the sound of "...a torrent of stomping Yiddish tunes, with coiled, staccato group movements and detailed narrative rants and pleas...the unison work was impeccable with company dancers moving playfully yet with perfect precision." (Los Angeles Times).
Don't miss three magical works by the gifted internationally renowned choreographers,Hofesh Shecther, Richard Seigal and Barak Marshall - danced by artists of one of the most versatile dance companies in the United States - BODYTRAFFIC!
"BODYTRAFFIC offered an invigorating, detailed and admirable evening of contemporary dance... astounding...speed and refined athleticism...superfast, supersexy, superexpressive." danceviewtimes.com
