 Hurray for the Riff Raff

Hurray for the Riff Raff's Alynda lee Segarra made a big impression even before she took the stage at this year's festival - such was the pre-fest buzz about this Bronx-born New Orleanian of Puerto Rican descent. Her rep preceded her, but she went on to capture our attention with music that falls solidly into the Southern American back porch revival tradition, yet is infused with a modern, eclectic spirit, and a voice and style distinctly her own.

Her album, "Look Out Mama" reflects Segarra's exploration and interpretation of classic American music, from Swamp Pop to Classic Country to Psychedelia and even Surf-Rock. A lot of musical ground gets covered, with every song unified by Alynda's soulful vocals and expert songwriting, and punctuated by cohort Yosi Perlstein's consummate fiddling.

If you caught Hurray at the festival, we don't need to tell you here is something special. If you didn't, don't miss your second chance!

 Spirit Family Reunion

"bluegrass rootsy songs, dripping with big harmonies, and a huge abundance of twang...

remember to put on your boots so you can stomp and clap along with songs that will have you dancing, swaying and hollering at the top of your lungs..."

Brooklyn band Spirit Family Reunion calls its sound "open-door gospel" - homegrown American music that makes you stomp, clap, shake and holler. Ever since they started singing on the street corners and in the subway stations of New York City, they invoke that old familiar feeling that was almost lost, but is found and brand new again.

"Dusty acoustic guitars, wailing fiddles and weeping accordions, with a woozy-yet-skintight rhythm section -- and topped off with burr-edged vocals that sound like they've been soaked in a Mason jar for generations -- it's the type of music that blurs the line between past and present so thoroughly, and so deftly, that time feels irrelevant." - Paste Magazine "Best Of What's Next"

 The Deslondes

Less Honkin, More Tonkin! The Deslondes are an old country-blues, early R&B, folk, gospel and honkytonk-influenced New Orleans-based quintet whose songs conjure evocative references like "spooky, slow-smoked dustbowl blues."

In their writing and performing, they combine elements of early Stax, Sun and Atlantic records with the influence of a raw, stripped-down sound gleaned off Alan Lomax's field recordings and the Mississippi Records catalogue.

They carry on the traveling country-troubadour tradition of their heroes Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams, Townes Van Zandt and Blaze Foley; their musical production and vocal arrangements are inspired by the rhythmic, high energy, and harmony-driven sounds of their other heroes, The Band and Allen Toussaint.
