Scorned: Emily Carr
March 1 to May 26, 2014

Scorned: Emily Carr engages in dialogue with the concurrent exhibition A Terrible Beauty: Edward Burtynsky, presenting works that demonstrate Carr's interest in the denatured landscape-an occasional, but notable, subject of her work. The exhibition includes drawings and paintings from the Gallery's permanent collection, as well as a small selection of works borrowed from the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery at the University of British Columbia. Key paintings in her oeuvre such as Scorned as Timber, Beloved of the Sky and Above the Gravel Pit reveal her interest in the impact of forestry and mining on the coastal landscape. Like Burtynsky, Carr observed this intervention with both horror and fascination.
