CONCERTS FOR CHILDREN FOUR TO ELEVEN YEARS OF AGE AND THEIR FAMILIES in five fun and educational musical presentations. The Kids’ Koncerts series features the full orchestra, and the very best in children’s musical entertainers.  

INSTRUMENT FAIR: Begins one hour before each concert in the Orpheum lobby. Children can touch and play real orchestral instruments generously provided by Tom Lee Music. FREE TO TICKETHOLDERS.


Kids’ Koncert #1: Wall to Wall Percussion

VSO Principal Percussion Vern Griffiths reprises one of the best-loved Kids concerts the VSO has ever presented.Vern plays everything including the kitchen sink, and shows how everyday items can actually be cool musical instruments.


Kids’ Koncert #2: Enchantment Theatre Company: The Firebird
Sunday, January 8, 2017 - 2pm Orpheum Theatre

An enchanted tree bears golden apples and an evil magician conjures a terrible storm in this imaginative production about Prince Ivan and the fabulous Firebird.With puppets, masks and magic, Enchantment Theatre Company presents the classic Russian tale The Firebird set to the evocative music of Igor Stravinsky.


Kids’ Koncert #3: Platypus Theatre: How the Gimquat Found Her Song
Sunday, February 12, 2017 - 2pm Orpheum Theatre

Embark on a musical expedition across continents and through centuries to help a discouraged bird discover her unique voice.Young audiences laugh, chant and sing along with the Gimquat and her wizard guide as they explore musical styles from Gregorian chant to rap. How the Gimquat Found Her Song is a heart-warming tale about the search for identity and a celebration of music in all of its forms.


Kids’ Koncert #4: Inspector Tovey
Sunday, March 12, 2017 - 2pm Orpheum Theatre

Maestro Bramwell Tovey dons the Inspector hat to investigate the instruments of a symphony orchestra, in a fun and educational concert centred on Saint- Saëns’s famous Carnival of the Animals. 


Kids’ Koncert #5: Classical Kids: Tchaikovsky Discovers America
Sunday, May 28, 2017 - 2pm Orpheum Theatre

This story tells of the great composer’s arrival in New York for the grand opening of Carnegie Hall in 1891.A surprise encounter with a young American girl, Jennie, reveals much about Tchaikovsky – his life in Russia, his love of music and his fears of conducting.This is a poignant story of the meeting of old world influences and new world experiences; a tale of contrast, courage and classical music.
