Vancouver’s local music scene has been gaining some pretty serious momentum over the last few years. Here to help you scout out the local talent are our friends on Facebook. Check out these Van bands and musicians, as recommended by Tourism Vancouver’s fans.
Marianas Trench, Recommended by Audrey W.
This Juno award-nominated Vancouver band’s latest album, Masterpiece Theatre, went platinum in Canada in 2010, no doubt thanks to their accessible pop-punk-emo sound and singer Josh Ramsay’s glossy vocals. Playing mid-sized venues across the U.S. and Canada, Marianas Trench is a not-to-miss act when they make a stop in their hometown Vancouver.
The Town Pants, Recommended by Suz R.
With lyrics like “join me for a pint in English Bay,” this Irish-folk-pop band has strong Vancouver roots — and a strong following. Their melodic vocals, strumming guitars and rousing fiddle will have you up and dancing in no time. For some “rowdy Irish drinking music” (according to Facebook fan Suz R.), check them out any time they’re back home in Vancouver.
En Karma, Recommended by Ross F.
En Karma gained quite a bit of exposure when they played three shows at Vancouver’s 2010 Winter Olympics. The band fuses bhangra, a type of folk music native to the Punjabi region of India and Pakistan, with modern beats and synthesized sounds. Facebook fan Ross F. says he loves their “lively, energetic, original music.”
Miles Black, Recommended by Melissa L.
Miles Black is one of those musicians that other musicians envy for the ease with which they move within a broad range of musical roles — pianist, composer, producer, arranger, songwriter...the list goes on. Hear his acclaimed jazz piano, often as part of a quartet or sextet, at spots such as Robson Street’s O'Doul's Restaurant & Bar and the Fairmont Pacific Rim.
The High Bar Gang, Recommended by Stuart C
The High Bar Gang has been called a “super group” of Canadian bluegrass artists. For a knee-slapping good time, check them out at venues such as The Vogue and other spots around B.C.
