A Geek's Guide to Vancouver

Weaver - Geek's Guide

While Vancouver has a number of trendy neighborhoods and cool nightlife scenes, this diverse city also caters to an entirely different crowd: one that loves space, science and the literary world. Visitors can explore a genuine castle, get involved in some medieval swordplay, identify stars in a planetarium or play arcade games. So whether you're a bona fide bookworm or just a self-proclaimed geek, let your nerdy self go wild with these fun diversions.

Broadway and Theatre Productions

Glee fans and former drama club kids will love the array of performing arts experiences in Vancouver. The Queen Elizabeth Theatre is one of Canada's largest "soft seat" theatres, and it hosts a number of ballet, opera and Broadway shows throughout the year. During the summer months, don't miss Bard on the Beach, an annual festival featuring open-air productions of classic Shakespeare plays.

H.R. MacMillan Space Centre

You don't have to be a Trekkie to appreciate the beauty of outer space - just see for yourself at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre. Visitors can gaze into the galaxies at the Gordon MacMillan Southam Observatory, spot constellations in the Planetarium and learn about the history of astronomy.

Science World

Feed your curiosity about the inner workings of the world at Science World. This educational institution has interactive exhibits and exciting shows to teach visitors about the human body, geology, dinosaurs, space and more. While you're here, make sure to watch an immersive film at the OMNIMAX Theatre, which boasts the second largest screen in the world and 28 speakers with high-fidelity sound.

Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society

Although you might not run into any princesses or dragons on your trip to Vancouver, you can still explore a real castle. Venture out to Victoria on Vancouver Island to see Craigdarroch Castle, a Victorian-era mansion with more than 30 stained glass windows, impressive stonework and woodwork, antique furniture and beautiful views of the Olympic Mountains.

Public Library

Bookworms will go berserk over the Vancouver Public Library's Central Branch, a behemoth nine-storey structure resembling the Colosseum. This downtown library touts more than 1.5 million books, periodicals and reference guides, and its unique architecture makes it a must-see attraction in downtown Vancouver.

Put your gaming skills to the test at arcades throughout Vancouver, like the fun centre at Playland inside the Pacific National Exhibition. Along with virtual arcades, visitors can play traditional carnival games like ring toss, Skeeball and Wac a Mole.

Another fun destination is Richmond Go Karts, where you can choose from more than 20 games in The Pit Stop or spend the afternoon racing around the track. As it turns out, kids aren't the only ones who know how to have fun.
