Shopping on Granville Island

There must be something about Vancouver that draws creative types, because the city is teeming with imaginative souls creating original arts and crafts at a staggeringly prolific rate.

Granville Island, in particular, is a veritable real-life Etsy marketplace -- where you can touch and feel unique, handmade goods in person. You’ll find handfuls of artists’ studios and co-ops on Granville Island. Here are just four of our favourite places to shop on the island for arts and crafts creations.

  • Craft Association of BC, Vancouver BC

    Craft Association of B.C.

Since 1972, the Crafts Association of B.C. (CABC) has helped promote Canadian fine craft, a specialized form of art that includes ceramic, glass, fibre, metal and wood. The nonprofit organization consists of members from all walks of life -- teachers, scholars, collectors and gallery owners. CABC opened Crafthouse in Granville Island as a way to showcase innovative work and to offer artists an opportunity to participate in rotating exhibitions with special themes. The gallery shop is a perennial favorite with locals and visitors, and continues to provide unique souvenirs for those who want to bring a taste of Vancouver art back home.

    Circle Craft Co-Op

If you’re looking for one-stop shopping, you’ve hit pay dirt. This non-profit co-op features more than 200 of Vancouver’s most talented artists. Their collective work, made from wood, clay, metal, glass and mixed media, have enriched the cultural landscape of the city and given Vancouver visitors an avenue for unique souvenirs and gifts. The co-op’s store on Granville Island sells artist works and displays new work through rotating artist exhibitions, promoting the high caliber of B.C. craft. A recent visit had us admiring a delicate and iridescent glass bird, adorable knitted baby booties and a white sculpted porcelain cup.

    Silk Weaving Studio

Silk takes on a new life in this studio and shop where several artists work, hand-dying and weaving silk garments and accessories. Visitors can observe the weaving process and experience the surprising variety of textures and colours that silk can take on by browsing the scarves, shawls, belts, hats, lingerie, jewelry, yarns and fibres. This is one of our go-to spots when shopping for special, handmade gifts, as no two pieces here are ever exactly the same.

    Vendor Booths

Sprinkled among the Granville Island Public Market’s produce and food vendors are a bevy of artists’ booths. The artisans and craftspeople who exhibit in these spaces change booth assignments and locations on a weekly basis, so check the Granville Island Day Vendors Association website for the market schedule. Expect to find shimmering glassworks, funky woven hats, gorgeous nature photography and much more. What better way to remember your visit to Vancouver than by taking home a crafty creation by one of these Vancouver locals?
