TOURISM VANCOUVER ANNOUNCES NEW BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Vancouver, BC (June 7, 2012):  Tourism Vancouver has announced its new Board of Directors for 2012/2013. The 15-member board, which represents a cross-section of Metro Vancouver's tourism industry, was formally introduced today at Tourism Vancouver's Annual General Meeting, themed "Cathedral Thinking". The event took place at Christ Church Cathedral and was attended by over 400 members of Vancouver's tourism industry.

The address by incoming chair, R. Gordon Johnson, regional vice president and general manager, Delta Hotels and Resorts, touched on the tourism industry's vision for Vancouver to become a "world city", the regional Tourism Master Plan initiative, and the importance of focusing and uniting the efforts of the tourism industry to achieve success in the years ahead.

"We must be cathedral thinkers" said Johnson. "What we do today must, by design, lead toward tomorrow's achievements, and  tomorrow's activities need to build toward longer term success".

Tourism Vancouver's board is responsible for policy issues and for ensuring the organization's business and market development plans, along with corresponding financial plans, are developed, endorsed and monitored.

Tourism Vancouver's 2012/13 Board of Directors consists of:

  • R. Gordon Johnson, regional vice president and general manager, Delta Hotels & Resorts (chair)
  • Howard Jang, executive director, Arts Club Theatre Company (past chair)
  • Bob Lindsay, owner/operator, Monk McQueens Fresh Seafood & Oyster Bars Inc. and Lift Bar Grill View
  • Carolyn Bauer, general manager, Yellow Cab Company
  • Dennis Skulsky, president and CEO, BC Lions Football Club
  • George Bartel, president, Cantrav Services
  • John Sandor, vice president, Sutton Place Hotel and Sandman Signature Hotels
  • Jonas Melin, general manager, Inn at False Creek, Quality Hotel Downtown Vancouver
  • Ken Cretney, general manager, Vancouver Convention Centre
  • Marion Harper Treskin, general manager, Westin Bayshore, Vancouver

Also on the meeting agenda was the presentation of four awards for excellence in the tourism industry. Award presentations were presided over by Tourism Vancouver's outgoing chair, Howard Jang who noted, "individuals and organizations have built a vibrant international tourism destination over many years and we wish to recognize that".

Tourism Vancouver award recipients:

  • Harold J. Merilees Memorial Award to David Podmore, board chairman and CEO for Concert Properties, and chair of PavCo, for his guidance and stewardship in relation to BC Place Stadium and the Vancouver Convention Centre expansion.
  • Hugh B. Main Lifetime Achievement Award to Bill Millerd, artistic managing director, Arts Club Theatre Company, for his commitments and achievements towards Vancouver's cultural community.
  • William Van Horne Visionary Award to Vancouver Mayor and Council, representing all the previous mayors and councils going back to 1886, for their vision to make Vancouver a green, livable and sustainable city.
  • Betty Fata Award for Conference Leadership to the University of British Columbia's department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Women and Children's Hospital for their active role in bringing numerous large conferences and events to Vancouver.
 
Tourism Vancouver's focus is on building exceptional customer relationships with meeting planners, travel influencers, travel media and independent tourists.  The organization's brand essence is about "exceeding expectations".
